Irish hit new wind record
Sector generates 2815MW of electricity on 11 January across island
Wind power delivered a record 2815MW in Ireland and Northern Ireland on 11 January, providing 60% of all the electricity generated on the island, according to System Operator for Northern Ireland (SONI).
The previous high was 2683MW set on 28 January 2016, SONI said.
SONI general manager Robin McCormick: “Managing this level of wind energy on the system presented significant technical challenges for SONI and our colleagues at EirGrid, who run the electricity grid in the Republic.
“We’ve been working hard towards utilising these types of conditions, analysing data and using all of our expertise to harness ever increasing amounts of wind.”
